Objective To design an ambulatory day surgery unit located in London, Ontario. Special consideration must be given to healthcare accessibility requirements for sensitive populations and the importance of private and public space awareness for both patients and staff members
Design Challenge To design a space that respects human rights, supports holistic wellness and cultures, while meeting the criteria of universal design standards. Using new technologies and healing methods to support the salutogenic model, the design will meet code requirements and accessible solutions. It will taken into consideration the dignity of patients, caregivers and families.
Solution Focusing on patient-centered, rather than physician-centered care, this design creates an equal connection between patients, partners and providers. Biophilic design application is used to promote wellness and healing throughout the spaces. Well thought out wayfinding techniques and traffic flow planning functionally maps out the journey of the patient, the caregiver and the employees to alleviate stressors. Equipment location and placement is purposeful to ensure optimal work ergonomics of staff members. The overall design concentrates on promoting humanization, empowerment, and connection for all users.
Spaces + Considerations Public entrance with overhang protection, separate entrance + parking for staff, service access, welcome hub, waiting room, reception, patient exam and prep spaces, offices, communication hub (scheduling, timing, communication hub between everyone), control nurse station, scrub rooms (5), operating rooms (3), minor procedure space, soiled room, clean assembly/work room, sterilization room, medication distributional station, gas storage, staff area (with both collaborative and private spaces), waste disposal, post-anesthesia recovery area, cafe/food space, public washrooms, consultation room, storage, touch down spaces, and nature escape spaces.
